Purpose

Level 5: Minced and Moist Diet

Designed for people who can chew but have difficulty with larger or harder pieces of food. This diet ensures safe swallowing and helps prevent choking or aspiration.

Key Characteristics:

Food Texture

Soft, moist, and easily mashed with a fork or spoon.

Consistency

Pieces are no larger than 4mm (for adults) or 2mm (for children), and food must be minced or finely chopped.

Moisture

Foods must be moist enough to hold together in a cohesive lump but not so runny that they separate or become thin liquids.

No Separations

Foods should not contain any hard, crunchy, or fibrous textures (e.g., nuts, seeds, raw vegetables).

Testing Method

Food should pass the IDDSI fork pressure and spoon tilt tests.

Examples

This diet is commonly used in hospitals, long-term care, or home settings for patients recovering from strokes, surgeries, or living with neurological or swallowing disorders.
